Summit Allotment Project Begins...

A project such as this will provide numerous opportunities for our students as well as the responsibility of maintaining the plot. An allotment is a fantastic resource to teach about the environment and the benefits, as well as the satisfaction, from growing your own produce. We hope to include a range of sensory areas as well as a wildlife section and the rest of the plot to be dedicated to growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Work has started on clearing the plot and preparing the ground for planting and we will shortly be constructing some raised beds. Our students are very excited about the allotment and we look forward to developing it over the coming months

Move for Mind Challenge

Summit signed up to the 'Move for Mind' challenge run by the mental health charity ‘Mind’. This was a 30 day challenge where we set an exercise goal and a fundraising goal to raise money for charity 'Mind'.

It seemed very relevant with the difficulties of lockdown and a focus on a positive and healthy outlet whilst supporting others.

Therefore, the challenge we set ourselves was: Summit students to complete 50 miles (collectively) during sessions and an aim to raise £150.

Redbourn Newsletter Article

We were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to have an article published in the Redbourn Parish Council Newsletter that was based on the response to Covid-19.

Summit’s article gave a snapshot of how everyone has really come together over these last few months and shown just how strong of a unit we are. Staff have gone above and beyond and the students themselves have coped extremely well in the circumstances.

Using innovative methods of communicating, supporting and teaching has meant enthusiasm during sessions has continued and it has pushed us as a team in finding new opportunities and mediums to incorporate in to our work.

Getting Out and About

One of the fantastic benefits of lockdown has been the motivation to get outside and enjoy some much needed fresh air! We have taken advantage of the beautiful area we are in and are finding lots of new routes to go for walks in our sessions.

Mental Health Awareness Week

The week of the 18th May 2020 marked Mental Health Awareness Week. This was a great opportunity for us to spread a message of support, inclusion, and focus on the positive in the current difficulties we are all facing due to lockdown. Summit decided to theme the week around ‘what makes you happy’ to encourage all to think about the things that bring happiness and positivity to their lives.

Learning Disability Week 2020

Mencap’s theme for this year’s Learning Disability Week was ‘friendship’ and the importance of these during lockdown. It was a great opportunity to focus on the friendships that have been important during this difficult period and how they have helped students to stay positive. We asked students to discuss what friendship meant to them and reflect on why they have been essential in coping during isolation.

Earth Day 2020

Wednesday 22nd April was the 50th anniversary of Earth day; the world’s largest movement to drive environmental awareness, looking at solutions to some of the serious climate issues we are currently faced with and a platform for global conversations and actions.

Summit celebrated this anniversary in a range of ways to help students understand how small changes can make a huge difference and that “everyone has the power to work as a community and unite for change”.

Summit's House of Helping Hands

Summit wanted to support those who are facing homelessness and highlight how fortunate our students are so we decided to build a ‘House of Helping Hands’. Each student could carry out an act of kindness to their family/friends/local community and have their initials placed on one of the ‘bricks’. It was a great way of engaging everyone and a visual representation of how all acts, however small, can create things when you work together and support one another.

Redbourn Fireworks

Staff and students attended the annual Redbourn fireworks which is always extremely popular and never disappoints. As well as the fireworks themselves there a rides to enjoy, lots of food to try and music.

Prior to the fireworks we met for dinner and there was a lot of excitement round the table!

The atmosphere on the common is always electric and we made sure we got a good viewpoint for the display.

As always, the display was very well choreographed to music and there were beautiful bursts of colour with all of us mesmerised.
